standout gold standard for Tasmania
about founded by Ed Carr in the 1990s when Tasmania was still an afterthought in Australian wine. He established House of Arras (meaning “tapestry”) as one of the finest—if not the finest—sparkling wine producers in Australia. There are vineyard plantings in both north-east and south-east Tasmania for a consistently high-quality style with a range of bottle-aged wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. Currently owned by Accolade, although surprisingly up for sale.
wines tasted
“A by Arras” Premium Cuvée NV (AUS$35)
46% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 19% Meunier. Non-vintage, although majority of latest release is 2020. 6.4g/l dosage, the sugar just about perceptible to add richness to an otherwise high-acid style. A generous, high-quality sparkling wine at a good price.
“EJ Carr Late Disgorged” 2007 (AUS$266)
Chardonnay/Pinot Noir blend, aged for fourteen years on the lees—2007 is the latest release. First made in 1998, this late-disgorged wine has been made every vintage since. It’s a rich style, balanced by crisp acidity, with complex lees, earth, mushroom, sweet spice, nougat aromas.
