about one of the first wineries to be established in Coal River Valley, near the main city of Hobart on the south coast. Owner Barry Edwards is a former grapegrower; now the winery makes Riesling , Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir—and sparkling Merlot. A pretty property to visit.

Sparkling Merlot NV (AUS$50)

The first release was 2009—the first sparkling Merlot to come from Tasmania (perhaps not surprisingly). It’s not heavily fizzy, and is lightly sweet, with plump, ripe plum aromas—characteristically Merlot. Not sure who it appeals to at this price, but it stands out for being unusual.
