standout hugely influential Adelaide Hills family
about Brian Crozer co-founded the Petaluma winery in Adelaide Hills when the region was in its infancy in the 1980s. He was also among the first to produce traditional method sparkling wine. After losing control of the winery in the early 2000s, he founded the Tapanappa winery with the support of Bollinger: his daughter Lucy is married to Xavier Bizot who is the great-nephew of Lily Bollinger. DAOSA, which stands for Dedicated Artisans of South Australia, is the sparkling wine label, from Piccadilly Valley, the highest, coolest, and wettest part of Adelaide Hills from which comes the region’s best sparkling wine (particularly Chardonnay). DAOSA have trademarked Method Classic to describe production methods; it will be interesting to see if fellow Australian producers follow suit. Still wines bottled under the TERRE à TERRE label.

Blanc de Blancs (vintage) (AUS$90)
Great introduction to Adelaide Hills sparkling wine. First fermentation in 600l barrels, before eight months in barrel with lees stirring. Four years on the lees in total (including barrel and bottle), with 6g/l dosage. Refined, lean, with a light fruitiness. Wouldn’t necessarily be mistaken for champagne—which is a good thing as it tastes like everything Adelaide Hills is capable of.
