standout rising star of Australian bubbles

about Kate Laurie studied in Champagne, where her dedication to bubbles began. She returned to Australia and met her now husband Hamish whose family owns a winery in Adelaide Hills—an area which coincidentally produces exceptional sparkling wine. Deviation Road is a leading example of the development of a relatively young region. Only sparkling wine produced.

wines tasted

Reserve Brut NV ($40)

60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. 15 months on the lees. Fruity, floral, pretty, bright, and light, with lees-based spice, toast, brioche, and mushroom.

“Beltana” Blanc de Blancs 2016 (AUS$105)

100% Chardonnay. Six years on the lees. 6g/l dosage. Serious, vinous style that benefits from opening up in the glass to allow the mature aromas to be expressed. If this is the future of Australian sparkling wine, then I’m on that road.
