standout first producer of sparkling Albariño in California

about Dan Person had experience of making sparkling wine at Schramsberg; his wife Jacqui had worked with Albariño. The logical next step was to make California’s first sparkling Albariño, and a gap in the market was successfully found. The range has since expanded, perhaps a little too widely. The style is generally short lees ageing, which lends freshness to the wines but a lack of complexity. Packaging is exceptional.

wines tasted

“Octopus” ($32)

Unusual in that it’s sparkling Albariño from California, but also because it’s aged for just four months on the lees. Fruit comes from different locations, from near the Sacramento river and from Central Coast. Very fresh, crisp, lightly aromatic style.

“Sea Urchin” Rosé Extra Brut 2021 ($30)

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the coastal climates of Santa Cruz and Marin. Just two months lees ageing. A fresh, fruity style with a touch of spice. Very much a drink now wine.

Philo 2019 ($30)

One-off Pinot Noir bottling; prehaps one-off for a reason.
