standout family producer located in Spain’s smallest appellation
about one of the best and most consistent cava producers, Alta Alella farm biodynamically. They are located in the D.O. of Alella just north of Barcelona near the Mediterranean sea. The land rises quickly from the water, with vineyards planted between 150 and 300m elevation. The combination of fresh immediacy and lees-based complexity makes Alta Alella’s cava some of the most expressive of the style. (Excellent still wine is also made.)
wines tasted
“Bruant” Brut Nature 2019
Made from Xarel·lo, locally called Pansa Blanca, this is Alta Alella’s first cava made without sulphur additions (an estimated 5mg/L is present). It’s aged for up to 24 months, the lees contact integrating with the natural weight and power of the Xarel·lo variety. Fresh, floral, and fruity, cava at its finest.
“Mirgen” Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2018
Blend of Xarel·lo (Pansa Blanca), Macabeu, and Parellada, aged for more than 30 months. Dry, crisp style, with no sugar, maintaining a fresh green fruit profile to balance mature complexity from the lees contact.
