standout first cava rosé made from Garnatxa

about Jané Ventura was established in 1914, and the winemaker is now fourth-generation Gerard Jané. The cellars, which were acquired by Jané's son Albert in 1954, are located in the village of El Vendrell, not far from the Mediterranean coast. His son Benjamí started bottling the wines on site in 1985, and the winery became part of D.O. Cava in 1988. There are now 15ha of plantings, farmed sustainably with a sensitive approach to tradition.

wines tasted

“Reserva de la Música” Brut 2017 ($20)

40% Xarel·lo, 36% Macabeu, 24% Parellada. 24 months lees ageing, no dosage. A floral, engaging style with pleasing, toasty complexity from the lees.

"Reserva de la Música" Brut Rosé 2018 ($18)

Jané Ventura was the first producer in Cava to make sparkling rosé from Garnatxa (aka Grenache), whose pale color, low tannins, and red fruit profile are all suited to sparkling wine. It's aged for at least 24 months before bottling with just 3g/L in the disgorgement. Plantings are at 400-600m, giving the wine a vivacious freshness. The wine, which has been made in this dry style since 1988, is named after local acclaimed cellist, Pablo Casals.

Gran Reserva 2016 ($55)

Blend of Xarel·lo and Macabeu, aged for five years, with no dosage. Classic example of serious, dry, lees-aged cava.
