standout very classy Montagne de Reims grower-producer

about Labbé et Fils are into the fourth generation of growers and winemakers, starting with Maurice Bonet at the beginning of the twentieth century and now run by his great-grandsons Damien and Jérôme. The family officially became grower-producers in 1975. The land is sensitively farmed to conserve it for the next generation and those following.

try

Tradition Brut Premier Cru ($70)

Mostly Pinot Noir which gives it depth and structure, with fresh fruitiness from Meunier and acidity from Chardonnay. This is their "introductory" champagne: but this is one of the best I have tried in a long time because of its verve, lightness of touch, a lees-based, spicy complexity, and a seemingly neverending finish.

Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut ($100)

Unusual in two respects: 100% Chardonnay from Montagne de Reims and a more powerful than usual Blanc de Blancs. The rich style is balanced by high acidity. A serious wine not afraid to be a little bit different.
