standout meunier focus
about The Moussé family has been growing grapes since the 1750s, and began making wine in 1923. The current winemaker is Cédric, who is the fourth generation winemaker. Working with just 6ha of vineyards, Cédric has pushed the winery towards a more sustainable approach, with the introduction of solar panels, wells, and energy efficiency. The winery is known for being one of the top producers focusing on the Meunier grape variety, which accounts for 80% of their plantings.
wines tasted
“Eugène” Blanc de Noirs NV ($73)
This is a great introduction to the house style of Moussé Fils and to the potential of Meunier to produce great champagne. There is 20% Pinot Noir in the blend, with Meunier dominating. Its fruity character is clear in the weightier style but it's still extremely fresh and everything one wants from champagne. It's made from a "perpetual reserve," similar to a solera system in which the wines are topped up each year for a consistent style.
“Les Fortes Terres” Special Club 2018 ($70)
100% Meunier from four parcels in the “Illimité” vineyard in Cuisles. Precise and rich, with depth and concentration of flavour, integrated less ageing (three years), and vibrant acidity. A classy expression of Meunier.
“Terre de l’Illimité” Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut (vintage) ($95)
95% Meunier, 5% Pinot Noir, single-vineyard from the village of Cuisles. Demonstrates the power, sophistication, and longevity of Meunier. 2012 tasted; 2019 latest release.
“Hommage à Cuisles” Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut NV ($125)
100% Meunier. Made to celebrate the winery’s 100th anniversary. Solely from the village of Cuisles, where the winery is located. Aged for two years on the lees, with 1g/l dosage. Yet more proof of the great sparkling wines made from Meunier: fruity but intense and serious.
