standout chalk and coastal growing conditions

about founded in 2003 by South African Andrew Weeber in Kent, not far from the coast of the English Channel, with the first releases from 2006. Challenging conditions more suited to growing vegetables, but there is depth and richness to the wines which have gained deserved praise. Soils are chalky: the white cliffs of Dover are not far away. Winemaker is Charlie Holland, vineyard manager Jon Pollard: this is a team focused on quality and expressing the cool, marsh-like climate of southern England (think Dickens).

Brut Reserve ($50)

76% Chardonnay, 14% Pinot Noir, 10% Meunier. Two years lees ageing 8g/l dosage. Delicious example of English sparkling wine: high acid balanced by sugar, green, citrus fruit aromas complemented by toasty, doughy lees texture.
