standout redefining the village of Damery

about run by Virginie and Vincent Vanpoperingh in the village of Damery, which although not awarded Premier Cru status has similar quality. Farming goes back six generations, though they are the first to make champagne. They own two and a half hectares of Meunier, two hectares of Chardonnay and one a half hectares of Pinot Noir. The style is defined by the use of old oak, which gives the wines a pleasing roundess. Farming is organic/biodynamic.

wines tasted

“Eclats” Extra Brut NV ($65)

50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, 25% Meunier. Five years ageing on the lees. Wine tasted is 57% 2014, 31% 2013, 12% 2012. 6g/l dosage. Rich, round, forward style.

“Reflets” Extra Brut NV ($70)

45% Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. 75% 2019, 25% 2018. Two years on the lees. 5g/l dosage. Paradoxically, this wine based primarily on black grapes is leaner and more elegant than “Eclats”—though both wines are of high quality. Further proof of the great potential of Meunier.
