standout almost Salon

about founded in 1760, essentially desclassified fruit for Salon, the prestigious champagne only made in exceptional vintages from the Grand Cru of Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger. In more ordinary years, the fruit forms part of Delamotte, alongside the villages of Oger and Avize, serving as an affordable introduction to an otherwise very expensive, exclusive wine.

Brut NV ($50)

60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 35% Meunier. Although Delamotte has a terrific reputation—particularly at the price—I always find this wine a little thin: it has the characteristic acidity of champagne, but perhaps a little too much so.
