standout the first préstige cuvée
about the first release of Dom Pérignon was in 1936, from the 1921 vintage, and it set the precedent for each Champagne producer having to list a luxury wine at the highest price and of the highest quality. Launched and still owned by Moët-et-Chandon, Dom Pérignon is very much its own thing: a by-word for luxury, a reputation based on myth and legend, and a wine which sells on its name rather than what it may actually taste like. The wine only comes from select, excellent vintages, but is widely available if you can afford it (more than 5m bottles are produced). More limited editions have been made in collaboration with very popular artists such as Lady Gaga and Lenny Kravitz.

Dom Pérignon 2008, 2012 ($150)
Although Dom Pérignon is an expression of the conditions of each vintage, the style is consistent: rich, powerful, vinous, and slightly reductive. It has the structure and complexity to age for many years, and there’s generally a welcome ten-year gap between vintage and release. However, the power and weight of the wine mean that this is not champagne for the light-hearted, and it isn’t the subtlest of wines. That may be heretical: the prestige and price of Dom Pérignon means that it is usually beyond criticism.
