standout ultra-fashionable grower-producer

about Francis Egly took over from his father in the 1980s and immediately set about raising the quality to the highest possible standard. The wines are partially aged in oak barrels, and receive a minimum three years lees ageing. Fruit comes from the Grand Cru vineyards of Ambonnay, Verzenay, and Bouzy, and the Premier Cru of Vrigny. These are serious wines inspired by Burgundy as much as champagne; like Burgundy, they’re getting increasingly expensive.

wines tasted

“Les Vignes de Vrigny” Brut NV ($100)

100% Meunier from the Premier Cru village of Vrigny. One of many increasingly good examples of how seriously exciting Meunier is. 1g/l dosage. Imagine a white Burgundy made from Meunier.

“Les Crayères” Blanc de Noirs Brut NV ($300)

100% Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, from a chalk-based vineyard planted in 1946. Proof that champagne does not need to be vintage to be serious, weighty, and vinous.
