standout Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs and Sézannais

about the family history dates back to the 1500s. In 2006 Nathalie Vignier and her brother Jean took over the winery, with the assistance of close friend Sebastian Nickel and Nathalie’s husband, Hubert Soreau, who is the winemaker at Le Clos l’Abbé. A lot of Champagne connections, with old, overlooked family plots in Côte des Blancs and Sézannais which they have revived to make distinctive, site-specific wines.

“Aux Origines” Brut NV ($55)

100% Chardonnay from Sézennais vineyards planted in the 1960s. Technically non-vintage, but 85% single-vintage. Three years lees ageing. 5g/l dosage. Slightly richer than Côte des Blancs, but with equally racy acidity. Great example of the slightly overlooked Sézannais sub-region.
