standout historic, great-value Savoie producer

about Royal Seysell was the first Savoie wine to be imported into the US, although the wines of the region remain obscure today. The winery sadly fell into decline into the 1990s after being bought by a Burgundy négociant, but locals Gérard and Catherine Lambert purchased it and resurrected quality. They teamed up with the grandson of the former owner, Olivier Vicheron, to maintain an historic lineage and commitment to the traditional wines of the small village.

“Royal Seyssel” 2015 ($29)

A blend of local varieties Molette (quite neutral so perfect for sparkling wine) and Altesse (which is more complex): ten months on the lees for the base wines, and then another three to four years in bottle after the second fermentation. Dosage is 3g/L, allowing the acidic structure to shine.
