standout more youthful sibling to Charles Heidsieck

about dates back to 1785, the Piper-Heidsieck name first appearing in the 1840s. Now owned by Rémy Cointreau with a very clear marketing angle. Rémy Cointreau also own neighbouring Charles Heidsieck, though the style is much more youthful. Because of the marketing and in comparison with Charles Heidsieck, it’s easy to dismiss Piper-Heidsieck as all show but the wines are surprisingly serious.

Brut NV ($50)

50% Pinot Noir, 30% Meunier, 20% Chardonnay. Occasionally sold in a zipped-up sleeve, which is useful for keeping future bottles cool but makes it hard to take the wine seriously—a problem Piper-Hiedsieck doesn’t seem too worried to address, as presentation is a key component of the brand. Pretty much everything you’d expect from champagne without being especially exciting.
