standout Rhône bubbles

about Louis Barrioul is the acclaimed owner and winemaker at Château de St-Cosme in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which he bought in 1992. Excited by the potential of the property, he purchased Château de Rouanne in 2018—an estate that goes back to 1150. Barrioul describes the estate as "an unknown sleeping beauty," able to produce Grenache-based wines characteristic of the Vinsobres appellation.

Brut Rosé (vintage) ($40)

55% Mourvèdre, 20% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 10% Marsellan, 5% Grenache: not a typical sparkling blend and it’s unusual to find such quality sparkling wine in the southern Rhône, but this is a stylish, sophisticated wine. It comes from vines planted between 1950 and 1975, on clay and limestone soils. Mostly Mourvèdre and other Rhône varieties, there's also a little Marsellan which is a variety from south-west France well-suited to warmer climates.
