standout transformative Montlouis producer
about Montlouis used to lie in the shadow of Vouvray—and to a large extent, still does. Jacky Blot, who died in 2023, was a leading figure in promoting the wines of Montlouis with their own distinct identity. That includes sparkling wine, with white and rosé made; these wines used to be an afterthought for underripe fruit, but are now a key part of Montlouis.
wines tasted
Brut Tradition NV ($30)
100% Chenin Blanc from 40-year-old vines. Fermentation with native yeast. Dry style (3g/l dosage). No malolactic fermentation: this is an intense, high-acid wine with characteristic waxy, honeycombed aromas from the Chenin. Barrel fermentation adds a round structure. This isn’t a straightforward wine.
Triple Zero Rosé NV ($35)
95% Gamay, 5% Grolleau. Touraine fruit. The triple zeros refer to no chaptalisation liqueur de tirage, no dosage. This is a pét-nat, with just one fermentation. Old oak barrels for fermentation and maturation before two years in bottle on the lees. A quirky but serious wine, with red fruit, floral, spicy, nutty aromas, and a dry, firm structure.
