standout Comtes de Champagne: Taittinger has a Chardonnay edge

about of the big houses, Taittinger is the youngest but quickly established a strong reputation with international prestige. The cellars are located in Epernay, and are a great introduction into champagne production and ageing. Taittinger, still family owned, embodies everything one imagines about Champagne: luxury, elegance, artistry, and a certain amount of pretense. The wines, however, are at various price points surprisingly affordable.

wines tasted

Brut Réserve NV ($35)

60% Pinot Noir and Meunier, 40% Chardonnay. For such a big house, Taittinger’s introductory wine is surprisingly good value. Three years lees ageing, for a pleasingly fruity style balanced by high acidity.

Cuvée Préstige Rosé NV ($35)

15% Pinot Noir red wine added to the blend for colour and fruity style, though overall very well balanced due to the 30% Chardonnay in the base blend. Pale and lightly fruity: gentle introduction to rosé champagne.

Comtes de Champagne Vintage ($125)

First made in 1952, the Chardonnay fruit comes from Grand Cru villages south of Epernay (Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger). A consistently fine, elegant, rich, vinous champagne: Burgundy with bubbles.

Taittinger Collection Vintage

Each year, there is a vintage wine with a striking and unique art label. Although the labels are very much for show, projecting the image of Taittinger and Champagne as luxury, the wines are usually extremely good, exemplifying the round yet acidic, Chardonnay-influenced style of the wines.
