standout striking labels & sparkling red
about run by two brothers, with Ralf in charge of viticulture and Bernd winemaking. Labels are dramatic and striking, and there is no fear of experimentation. A quarter of wine production is sparkling wine (1,700 cases).
wines tasted
Brut Nature Riesling 2019 (€15.50)
Dry and leesy with high acid: sparkling Riesling.
Cuvée Katharina Brut Riesling 2019 (€15.50)
Also Riesling, but 7-8g/l dosage which balances the high acid.
Creation Brut 2018 (€17.50)
Unusual but successful blend of 60% Riesling and 40% Pinot Noir which combines the smokiness and zestiness of Riesling and the weight and red fruits of Pinot Noir.
Doosberg Brut Riesling 2015 (€37)
Eight years on the lees, which is perhaps a little too long: lots of lees-based maturity.
Rotsekt Brut 2019 (€20.50)
100% Spätburgunder sparkling red wine. One year in barrique before bottling. Low tannins and light-bodied, with red fruit, herbal aromas. Maybe an acquired taste and a definite food wine, especially with smoked Germany food.
