standout specialist Sekt producer
about established in 1984 by Volker Raumland with the sole focus on sparkling wine; in 2020, Raumland joined the VDP as the only Sekt specialist. 10ha planted, all to the Champagne grapes. Family owned and run. Wines are often long-aged, for at least three years; with that naturally high acidity, an interesting alternative to champagne.
wines tasted
Cuvée Katharina 2019 (€25)
Pinot Noir/Meunier, three and a half years on the lees. Earthy, fruity, yeasty.
Cuvée Maria-Lutse 2019 (€25)
All Pinot Noir, three and a half years on the less, minimal dosage. Toasty and fruity, very fresh, with a good grip.
Rosé 2015 (€30)
All Pinot Noir from a warm vintage. Seven and a half years on the lees. Fresh, with bright red fruit aromas, beginning to develop interesting tertiary aromas.
Blanc de Blancs 2015 (€39)
All Weißburgunder, because back in the 1990s when first plantings were made Chardonnay wasn’t allowed for Sekt. Rich, powerful, weighty. Shows that Pinot Blanc can produce interesting sparkling wine.
Chardonnay 2015 (€39)
Also seven and a half years on the lees, with some barrel fermentation for the base wines. Bright, vibrant, with a lees-based texture.
Kirchenstück Brut Nature 2015 (€39)
From the most southerly vineyard in Rheinhessen. 100% Pinot Noir, very dry and mature, not quite as fresh as the Chardonnay.
Triumvirat 2015 (€50)
Blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier, aged for over eight years on the lees. Tasted just after disgorgement, official release September 2024. A pleasing combination of fresh, fruity liveliness and a round, yeasty mouthfeel.
Pinot Noir Grande Réserve 2012 (€50)
Eleven years on the lees but maintaining remarkable vibrancy, with a fruity, floral nose and a weighty texture.
