standout wines from sandy soils below sea level

about Not only are Mirco Mariotti's wines ideal for drinking on the beach, they are literally beach wines. Mariotti works with vines just 300 meters from the Adriatic sea, some of which are below sea level. The vines are non-grafted and on their own native rootstock—sand is one of the few soils resistant to phylloxera—and the roots dig as deep as two meters. Style is very natural.

wines tasted

“Smarazen” NV ($23)

The two grape varieties used for this fun sparkling wine are Trebbiano Romagnolo and Malvasia Bianca di Candia, both widely planted in the region. The first fermentation is all with native yeasts, the second fermentation in bottle after the addition of grape must from the same harvest. The name "Smarazen" comes from a local card game a bit like rummy.

Set e Mez Rosato NV ($23)

From the Fortana grape variety, the cloudy appearance hints that the wine is a bit too natural. Light and crisp, rather like a cider made from red apples. “Set e Mez” is a card game similar to blackjack.
