standout underrated Napa winery owned by Cordiníu
about a spectacularly located property in Carneros bought by Cordoníu in 1991. (Artesa means “hand-crafted.”) Typically for Carneros, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are made for still wine but also for sparkling. Also typically for Napa, the wines are expensive and very good, perhaps not receiving the attention they deserve: the sparkling wines can only be bought at the winery.
wines tasted
Gran Reserve Brut 2015 ($60)
Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend. 20% of the base wines were aged in neutral oak barrels. Wine aged in bottle for four years. A fuller, fruitier California style with citrus and stone fruit aromas, but maintaining vibrant acidity which balances the lees-based complexity: still very fresh despite some maturity. Only available at the winery.
Gran Reserva Brut Barrica NV ($65)
Base wines aged in ten-year-old French barriques which gives the wine a distinct roundness. 75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay—this is a fuller style. From selected plots on the property, with gravelly soils. Three years in the bottle before disgorgement. A rich, full, lees-based style, but still very fresh. Fulfils the true potential of Carneros,
