standout fashionable, experimental California producer

about Michael Cruse’s sparkling wines have become extremely fashionable, with with an experimentation in contrast to more traditional producers. However, quality can vary and not all the wines are pristine: there is a definite pét-nat vibe to even the wines made with the traditional method. They are also (too) expensive.

wines tasted

Tradition ($45)

73% Chardonnay, 27% Pinot Noir, made in the traditional method with eighteen months lees ageing. Stone fruit and lees aromas, no dosage or sulphur. Lacks the concentration of a champagne at a similar price.

Sparkling Valdiguié ($40)

Perhaps the best of Cruse’s pét-nats, low in alcohol, fruity, though definitely for immediate consumption.

Ultramarine ($85)

One of the most sought-after sparkling wines in California, though on tasting it doesn’t stand out: even Michael Cruse doesn’t understand why people are prepared to pay so much for it. 100% Chardonnay from the Heintz vineyard—one of the best in Sonoma County. Not entirely clean.
