standout Lake Erie bubbles

about formally established in 1972 by Italian immigrant Frank Mazza in Pennsylvania; expanded to Lake Erie in 2004, where 25% of New York’s wines are made usually from hybrids. Spirits also made. Quality doesn’t match quantity, but commercial ambition cannot be faulted.

“The Perfect Bubbly” ($16)

Vidal Blanc, Cayuga White, Riesling, Traminette from Lake Erie (although little indication on label). 16g/l sugar. Bubbles come from carbonation. Sweetness is balanced by acidity. Tastes like grape juice, with obvious commercial appeal.
