standout large-volume Champagne investment in Napa
about Mumm were established in Napa in 1984: the story is that they located the ideal sites for sparkling wine, but the reality is they are based in the heart of Napa Valley, a prime tourist destination. The wines, mostly sourced from the cooler area of Los Carneros, are of good quality for broad consumption although the wines have got a little too expensive. The winery gets a lot of visitors, but time the visit well and the tour is a great overview of sparkling wine production.
wines tasted
Brut Prestige NV ($26)
45% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Gris & Meunier. 10.8g/l dosage. 18 months lees ageing. The wine most widely found: it’s a good introduction to California sparkling wine without being particularly interesting. The price is just a little too much.
Brut Prestige Extended Tirage ($38)
53% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay, 3% Pinot Meunier, 2% Pinot Gris. 11g/l dosage. 30 months lees ageing. Rich, fruity style but lacking complexity despite extended ageing. There is another version, aged for much longer, for 91 months.
Demi-Sec NV ($38)
55% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 3% Pinot Meunier, 2% Pinot Gris. Same blend as the range, but with 33g/l dosage. Definitely for the sweeter palate, but at quite a price for this style/quality. Drink with spicy food.
