about Walter Schug moved to California from Germany in the early 70s, becoming Joseph Phelps’s winemaker in Napa Valley (when Riesling was still widely planted). He formed his own winery in 1980, based in the Sonoma side of Los Carneros, specialising in Pinot Noir.
