standout outstanding representation of Columbia Gorge
about located in Columbia Gorge, Washington, with fruit sourced from elsewhere in the state. Started in the 1990s by James and Poppie, the Syncline winery is low-key but one of the best in Washington’s most exciting AVA. Sparkling wine is not the focus, but is excellent and should receive more attention (as their other wines, especially Gamay, should too).
wines tasted
Blanc de Noirs Brut 2014 ($65)
100% Pinot Noir from the Celilo vineyard on Underwood Mountain. Barrel fermented, goes through full malolactice fermentation, sulphur only added at bottling. Maintains remarkable freshness despite its age, with eight years on the lees. Cider-like quality, in a good way, with a rich, round mouthfeel.
Brut Rosé 2018 ($30)
51% Pinot Noir, 49% Chardonnay. From two vineyards within Columbia Gorge, planted at between 300 and 450m. Three and a half years on the lees, with 1.5g/l dosage. Lovely red fruit aromas, with cinnamon spice, and vibrant acidity. Very stylish.
