standout best-known for sweet wine, but there’s also classy sparkling
about Klein Constantia is located just south of Cape Town, on a slope rising above False Bay which provides a cooling influence. The estate dates back to 1685, revived in the 1980s as one of the first wineries to aim to raise the quality of South African wine. The most famous wine is Vin de Constance, one of the world’s greatest sweet wines, but quality is consistent across the range of wines.

Cap Classique Blanc de Blancs (vintage) ($40)
100% Chardonnay from the lower part of the slope, picked early for acidity and freshness. A crisp, linear, lightly fruity style. The latest release has no sugar added in the dosage, for a leaner, drier style. 38 months lees ageing in the bottle, the developed yeasty texture balanced by crisp acidity. A classy expression of South African sparkling wine.
