standout fashionable contemporary Sonoma producer

about from a farming family (in Winters, the other side of the Vaca mountains from Napa Valley), Andrew and Adam Mariani bought a property in Sonoma which had been used for grape-growing back in the nineteenth century (though it had been a turkey farm before their purchase). It’s certainly a beautiful property which is very popular with visitors from nearby San Francisco; however, the wines are good but lack some depth.

wines tasted

Sparkling Chardonnay (vintage) ($80)

From the estate in the volcanic foothills of the Mayacamas mountains, with plantings specifically for sparkling wine which have extra canopy to avoid sunburn. Two years on the lees. A well-made wine that lacks edge, at an extraordinary price.

Estate Blend Pét-Nat (vintage) ($38)

An unsual blend of the varieties grown on the estate: Chardonnay, Sylvaner, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, all harvested and fermented together. Light-bodied (11.5%), dry, citrus and stone fruits, acidity quite tart—a little too much so.
