standout one of the two big cava producers; also own Segura Viudas and Gloria Ferrer
about Freixenet’s modern history begins in 1911, when Pedro Ferrer Bosch of the Ferrer de la Freixened married Dolores Sala Vivé of Casa Sala. In 1914, the first sparkling wine was released under the Freixenet label, and the business quickly grew. Since the beginning, and then with a commercial reinvention in the 1960s, Freixenet have been extremely good at advertising and self-promotion with some iconic campaigns. The product has not always matched the image, however. There is a range of nine cavas, including “ice cava.” In 2018, Freixenet merged with German giant Henkell to create the biggest sparkling wine corporation in the world. Freixenet have also expanded into the prosecco market.
wines tasted
“Cordon Negro” NV (under $10)
One of the most widely available cava bottles on the market (first launched in 1974 and the first sparkling wine to be launched into space), found in most supermarkets. For the price, it’s a good wine but the black bottle is more memorable than the wine itself.
Elyssia Gran Cuvée Brut ($18)
Chardonnay, Parellada, Macabeo. Decent if ummemorable. The Elyssia range was launched in 1997, with a rosado also made from Pinot Noir.
